Rutile has one of the highest refractive indices at visible wavelengths of any known crystal, and also has exceptionally large birefringence and high dispersion. Due to these properties, certain optical elements, especially polarized optical elements, can be used to make certain optical elements for longer visible and infrared wavelengths, up to about 4.5 μm.
In beach sands, Rutile is abundant enough to be an important component of heavy minerals and deposits. Miners extract and separate valuable minerals such as rutile, zircon and ilmenite. The main uses of rutile are in the manufacture of refractory ceramics, as a pigment, and in the production of titanium metal.
Rutile is mainly steel gray, some of which are brown red, light brown and other colors, with diamond luster. After magnification with a microscope, the shape is rounded columnar granular and irregular, with rounded granular as the main, followed by irregular granular. It has electrical conductivity, the specific gravity is 4.2~4.3. The particle size is slightly finer than that of titanium concentrate, 60 mesh to 80 mesh passes through, and 80 mesh passes 90%. The main constituent minerals of rutile concentrate are rutile, anatase and white titanium. The proportion of the three minerals determines the grade and quality of rutile concentrate.
