Rutile, a titanium oxide mineral with the chemical composition TiO2, is found in igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks around the world. Rutile also occurs in other minerals in the form of needle-like crystals. Rutile has a high specific gravity and is often concentrated by current and wave action in the "heavy mineral sands" that exist today in onshore and offshore sediments. Many of the world's rutile products come from these sands. Rutile is used as titanium ore, pulverized into a white powder, used as a pigment in paints, and processed into a variety of products. The network of needle-like rutile crystals creates the "eyes" and "stars" in many gemstones, such as star rubies and star sapphires.
Rutile is mainly steel gray, some of which are brown red, light brown and other colors, with diamond luster. After magnification with a microscope, the shape is rounded columnar granular and irregular, with rounded granular as the main, followed by irregular granular. It has electrical conductivity, the specific gravity is 4.2~4.3. The particle size is slightly finer than that of titanium concentrate, 60 mesh to 80 mesh passes through, and 80 mesh passes 90%. The main constituent minerals of rutile concentrate are rutile, anatase and white titanium. The proportion of the three minerals determines the grade and quality of rutile concentrate.
