At present, there are two main production methods of Titanium Dioxide in the world, namely sulfuric ACID method and chlorination method.

The sulfuric acid process was first applied by the National Lead Industry in the United States in 1925.

The chlorination process was first invented by Faben in 1932. In 1959, DuPont developed the DuPont process and built a 100000 ton/year production plant, realizing the industrialization of the chlorination process. Relatively speaking, chlorination technology is difficult, and the core technology is only mastered by a few enterprises. The total production capacity of chlorination method abroad accounts for 76%, while that of domestic chlorination method accounts for 16%.

The top five titanium dioxide enterprises in the world are:

1. Chemours 1.31 million tons/year

2. Longbai Group 1.14 million tons/year

3. Tronox 1.106 million tons/year

4. Ventar 915000 tons/year

5. Kronos 550000 tons/year

With the continuous improvement of global demand, the total production capacity of titanium dioxide is steadily rising, and the production capacity of chlorinated titanium dioxide is gradually increasing. In the future, there will still be many projects under construction in the market (sulfuric acid method, chlorination method), and the market capacity will continue to grow.

01 Chemours

In July 2015, Chemours completed the split with DuPont and became an independent listed company. Its predecessor was DuPont's High Performance Chemicals Business Unit. At present, the company's titanium dioxide production capacity is 1.25 million tons, ranking first in the world. There are four plants, all of which are produced by chlorination process. Enterprises and factories are mainly distributed in the United States, Mexico and Taiwan, China.

Chemours is a global leader in three business areas, including titanium dioxide technology, fluorine products and special chemicals. It provides first-class products, application technologies and innovative chemical based solutions to more than 5000 customers in more than 130 countries/regions. Kemu has many famous brands, such as Opteon, Teflon, Ti Pure, Krytox, Viton and Nafion. Its products are widely used in industrial production fields such as plastics, coatings, refrigeration, air conditioning, mining and petroleum refining.

02 Longbai Group

Longbai Group Co., Ltd. is a large diversified enterprise group dedicated to the research, development and manufacturing of titanium, zirconium, lithium and other new materials and the deep integration of industries. It is listed in Shenzhen Stock Exchange (stock code: 002601). At present, the Group's titanium industry has been distributed in five provinces and six cities, including Jiaozuo, Henan, Deyang, Panzhihua, Xiangyang, Hubei, Chuxiong, Yunnan, and Jinchang, Gansu, forming a green whole industry system from the mining and processing of titanium minerals to the manufacturing of titanium dioxide and titanium metal, and the comprehensive utilization of derived resources.

During the "Fourteenth Five Year Plan" period, under the guidance of the "green development" strategy, the company will further improve the green "big chemical" industry portfolio, and plan to produce more than 1.5 million tons/year of titanium dioxide, 80000 to 100000 tons/year of sponge titanium and titanium alloy, and 400000 tons/year of lithium battery materials.

03 Tronox

Tenot Titanium Dioxide is a natural resource company, including oil and gas exploration and production, oil refining and sales, offshore drilling, chemical production and coal mining.

On March 31, 2006, Tenot Titanium Dioxide officially became an independent company, and its titanium dioxide product brand was TRONOX. In 2019, Tenot completed the acquisition of Coste's titanium dioxide business, with the current production capacity of 1.1 million tons, ranking the third largest titanium dioxide manufacturer in the world. The factories are mainly distributed in the United States, the Netherlands and Germany.

04 Venator

Venator is a global manufacturer and marketer of special chemicals. The company serves many end consumer markets, the largest of which is consumer goods, followed by paint and coating, thermal insulation and other building materials, energy and aviation.

Venator split its pigment and additive business and established a new company called Venator, which remains independent. The factories are mainly distributed in Germany, Finland, Britain, etc.

05 Kronoss

Kronos is one of the major titanium dioxide manufacturers in the world, with industrial innovation and product quality leading the world. Connors is skilled in the use of chlorination, which can produce titanium dioxide more safely and efficiently. The factories are mainly distributed in Germany, the United States, Belgium, etc.
